You will find below a list of the most popular international and bilingual schools for expats in Cambodia with fee information. It includes nursery schools, primary and secondary (high) schools and you will find the right school to prepare for International Baccalaureate, and other diploma in Cambodia. Some schools may follow the American or British curriculums with English speaking programs while others are regulated under the French education system.

Cambodia Education

Traditional education in Cambodia was handled by the local wat with Bhikkhu as teachers for the young male student body. Education mostly consisted of memorizing Buddhist chants in Pali. During the period of the French protectorate, an educational system based on the French model was inaugurated. During the Khmer Rouge regime, education was dealt a severe setback with many schools being closed and educated people and teachers subject to suspicion and, at the worst, execution.

A modern system is being developed based on the Vietnamese model. Literacy is estimated at 73.6 percent. Education is theoretically free, however many families can not afford to send their children to school and rely on them to work or do chores. The process begins with 6 years of primary education. Six years of secondary education are divided into 2 phases.

International Schools

Developments are slowly increasing the level of education, but many private schools have opened to offer higher internationally accepted standards. Some of these schools operate on a ethnic or religious based admissions process. This enables children to study their own language, culture, or religion. These include: Chinese-language schools, Vietnamese-language (often Roman Catholic) schools, French-language schools, English-language schools, and Khmer-language schools. Most of these private schools are in the capital Phnom Penh.

International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Cambodia. There may be some local population, but the schools are geared for an international student body. Schools usually follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, Canada or Australia/New Zealand. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English, French, Spanish, German, or Japanese. Many schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam. Schools often provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.

Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.

Accreditation

The CoIS (Council of International Schools) is a non-profit association of international schools and post-secondary institutions which provides educational accreditation, teacher and leadership recruitment services, links to higher education, governance assistance and help with founding new schools. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is an accrediting body for schools around the world.

Membership in the European Council of International Schools (ECIS), the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS), and the Mekong River International Schools Association (MRISA) provides more information about standards and practices.
