Education in Germany

The education system is given great respect in Germany. Teachers are paid honorable salaries and university employees are often given higher regard than esteemed businessmen. The responsibility for the system falls to each individual states (Länder), with the federal government offering a supervising role.

Public education is free and students must complete between 11 to 12 years of education. Children usually attend kitas (short for Kindertagesstaette), also known as Kindergarten or Vorschule before attending formal education starting at age 6. Grundschulle (primary school) continues for six grades. After completing primary school, students have a choice between 3 types of schools: Hauptschule, Realschule or Gymnasium. A child's academic ability usually determines which school they attend, but it is also the choice of the student and parents. In order to enter university, students must pass the Abitur examination which is offered at the conclusion of Gymnasium; or more recently pass the Meisterbrief (master craftman's diploma).

The official school year runs between the 1 August and 31 July. Classes generally begin at 08:00 until 13:30 and are held in the same room, with teachers moving from room to room. The lessons last on average for 45 minutes and there is a break of five minutes after each lesson. Instruction is in German, with foreign language introduced as early as 3rd grade. Foreign languages include English and French.

International Schools

International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Germany. There may be some local population, but the schools are usually geared for an international student body. Schools follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, or France. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English, French, or Spanish. Schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.

Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.
