Education in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, but has a lot of atonomy including its own Department of Education known as Departamento de Educación del Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico. The education system is based on the American model. It is free and compulsory between the ages of five and 17/18 from elementary to high school. Hurricane Maria in 2017 greatly affected the infastructure of Puerto Rico, but the education system remains a priority. Instruction is in Spanish and English is taught as a second language at all levels.

Education in Puerto Rico is divided into primary, lower secondary and upper secondary.

Education often starts with nursery or preschool from two to five and if often private. The kindergarten year takes place between pre-school and primary school. Elementary school is the first year of a student’s compulsory education at or around age 6 til Grade 6.

Lower secondary school or junior high school, is for three yearsconsisting of grades 7-9 for students from 12-15 years old.

High school or Upper Secondary School is for three years from grades 10-12 for students from 15 to 18 years old. Students may leave school on their 17 birthday, but most remain to finish thier 12th grade year. and earn their high school diploma. A high school diploma is required to persue further education like university. Some schools offer Advanced Placement (AP) programs and access to college entrane exams like the SATs.

International Schools

International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (primarily multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Puerto Rico. International schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam.

There is usually local population, as well as an international student body. Schools may follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, etc. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate

Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.
