Chile Education

Education in Chile is divided in preschool, primary school (Enseñanza básica), secondary school (Enseñanza media), and technical or higher education (universidad). Secondary schools follow a two-pronged approach of scientific-humanities and technical-professional education. The former has to do with the regular courses on literature, history, physics, math, while the latter focuses on practical and technical areas. There is also a third option, known as artistic education. It is estimated that 99.7 percent of children between 6 to 14 years enroll for basic education, and 87.7 percent in secondary education.

Recently, there have been protests about the current system. Known as the Chilean Winter, (in reference to the massive protests of August 2011) these are a series of ongoing student-led protests across Chile. Students are demanding a new framework for education in the country, including more direct state participation in secondary education and an end to the existence of profit in higher education. Only 45% of high school students study in traditional public schools and most universities are also private. As of yet, student protestors have not achieved their objectives.

International Schools

International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Chile. There may be some local population, but the schools are geared for an international student body. Schools usually follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, Canada or Australia/New Zealand. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English, French, Spanish, German, or Japanese. Many schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam. Schools often provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.

Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.

The CoIS (Council of International Schools) is a non-profit association of international schools and post-secondary institutions which provides educational accreditation, teacher and leadership recruitment services, links to higher education, governance assistance and help with founding new schools. Association of British Schools in Chile (ABSCH) and the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) provide listing of British schools abroad. The Association of American Schools in South America (AASSA) offers information on American styles schools within the continent. European Council of International Schools (ECIS) offers membership for European schools abroad. American Conference of Rectors brings together 40 of the leading British-style schools on the continent and the Latin American Heads Conference (LAHC) can also provide information on international schools in Chile.
