Education in Guinea Conakry

The education system of Guinea is based on the French system and French remains the language of instruction, even after independence. Education is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 7 and 13. However, it is estimated that only about 50% of children attend primary school.

Students who complete their primary education earn the Certificat ďEtudes Primaires Elémentaires or CEPE (Certificate of Primary Elementary Studies). Few students continue in lower secondary school, but those that do seek the Brevet ďEtudes du Premier Cycle Certificate. To complete upper secondary schools takes a lot of support and funds and succesful students take the Baccalauréat Deuxième Partie examinations.

International Schools

There are few private or international schools in Guinea Conakry. Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.

AISC is a non-profit, non-denominational, co-educational day school. Its curriculum is based on the U.S. model with classes from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Students graduate with an American high school diploma. Students are expected to provide their own school supplies. The school year runs from mid-August until mid-June and the school observes official American and Guinean holidays. It is fully accredited by MSA-CESS, and the only English-medium school in Guinea to be so. School uniforms are not required.

This international school follows French curriculum which allows students to transfer easily into any French school in France or any other country in the world. It is the only privately funded school by the French government in Conakry. LAC offers three high school curriculum streams: Série Scientifique; Série Economie Sociale and Série Litteraire with the French Baccalaureate as a culmination of a students studies. Instruction is in French and the school is accredited by the French Ministry of Education and listed on the official roster of the French Schools in Foreign Countries (AEFE).
