Education in Luxembourg

The Ministère de l'Education is in charge of organizing and overseeing the national education plan of Luxembourg. Education is compulsory for all children between 4 and 16. Younger children may attend optional nursery schools (education précoce).

Children must be enrolled at the education department (Service de l'Enseignement) in the commune of residence and registered on the citizens's register of the Bureau de Population. Parents receive an enrollment letter from the commune where they reside, which must be sent back before 1 April. Starting at age three (by September 1st) they may enroll in a nursery school.

Luxembourg's three official languages (Luxembourgish, French and German) mean that the system is formatted trilingually. Students usually learn to read and write in German in primary school, then learn French and Luxembourgish. Proficiency in all three languages is required to graduate public school.

Students receive either general or technical education and complete their studies with examinations. The general education is a preparation for higher education with two divisions: lower and upper. Technical education has three cycles with the first allowing students to learn a trade, the second leading to an aptitude certificate and the last includes technical instruction that prepares them for a university course.
