Education in Paraguay

Education in Paraguay has not always been a priority, but that is changing. Currently, only 45 percent of students complete sixth grade, and adults have an average of six years of education.

School in Paraguay consists of twelve years of education which are free and compulsory to the age of 14. Primary school begins at the age of six or seven and consists of six grades. Secondary school is divided into lower secondary (seventh through ninth grade) and upper secondary (tenth through twelth grade).

Despite the availability of upper level education, people in Paraguay often prefer to send their children to Chile.

International Schools

International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (primarily multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Paraguay. International schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam.

There is usually local population, as well as an international student body. Schools may follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, etc. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.

Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.

ASA is a bilingual (English/Spanish) international school with classes from early childhood through college-prep. It is a private, non-profit, day school which offers an educational program for American, international, and Paraguayan students. Courses are in English, with all students in grades 1-12 also studying Spanish. Students can graduate with both a U.S. High School Diploma and Paraguayan Studies Diploma. The school is accredited by SACS and AASSA and is recognized in Paraguay by the Ministry of Education and Culture as well as the U.S. Office of Overseas Schools (A.O.S.).

Academia Cristiana Asuncena is an international school that offers Christ-centered curriculum. PAIS is an international school with about 50% Paraguayan students and 50% international. Instruction is in English for children from pre-school through grade 12. Classes are in English with a few specialized classes in Spanish. The curriculum is recognized by the Paraguayan Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) as well as NAIS. The school follows the American academic calendar beginning in August and ending in June.
