You will find below a list of the most popular international and bilingual schools for expats in Saudi Arabia with fee information. The list includes nursery schools, primary and secondary (high) schools for you to find the right school to prepare for the International Baccalaureate and other accreditation in Saudi Arabia. Some schools may follow the American or British curriculums with English speaking programs while others are regulated under the French, German, Italian or India language and system, among others.

Education in Saudi Arabia

Public education - from primary education through college - is open to every Saudi citizen. The second largest governmental spending in Saudi Arabia goes for education. The government spends 8.8% of its gross domestic product on education, compared with the global average of 4.6%, which is nearly double the global average on education (2019 data).

Islamic studies are part of the education system alongside scientific and social studies that vary from educational institution to another.

Public, private, and international nurseries (for children between 0 and 3) and kindergarten or pre-school (for those between 3 and 5) are plentiful. However, these are not compulsory throughout the Kingdom.

Primary school

In Saudi Arabia, primary school is for students between 6 and 12 years old and is overseen by the national Ministry of Education. In fact, all students in the Kingdom must legally attend all six years of primary school. However, none of the higher levels of education are compulsory.

Secondary school

Depending on the institution, secondary school may have a different meaning in Saudi Arabia. After primary school, the Saudi system splits into intermediate (ages 13 – 16) and secondary (ages 17 – 19) stages. Meanwhile, some international schools call secondary school high school and offer it for those aged between 14 and 17. Neither secondary nor intermediate school is compulsory in the Kingdom – although it is highly advisable.

International Schools

International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Saudi Arabia. Many schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam.

There may be some local population, but the schools are usually geared for an international student body. Schools may follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, etc. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English, French, Spanish, German, or Japanese. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.

Admission and enrolment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.
