You will find below a list of the most popular international and bilingual schools for expats in Ivory Coast with fee information. The list includes nursery schools, primary and secondary (high) schools for you to find the right school to prepare for the International Baccalaureate and other accreditation in Ivory Coast. Some schools may follow the American or British curriculums with English speaking programs, while others are regulated under the French education system.

Education in Ivory Coast

The education system in Côte D'Ivoire or the Ivory Coast consists of three stages:

  • Primary School - Six years leading to a certificate of primary studies
  • Secondary School - Seven years, leading to a certificate or baccalauréat.
  • University education, technical or teacher-training institutions

The school year is divided into three terms beginning in September, a break at Christmas and Easter, and a two-month summer recess. The average week consisted of approximately thirty hours of classes, Monday through Saturday morning.

The literacy rate in Ivory Coast remains low at only about 48%. Many children are not enrolled in school, and few female students continue on to secondary education. At the end of secondary education, students can sit the Baccalauréat examination.

International Schools

International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Ivory Coast. However, an armed conflict in 2004 between France and the Ivory Coast shut down many schools, including a majority of the International schools. Some schools remained open, with more re-opening in recent years.

Schools may have some local population, but are usually geared for an international student body. Schools follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, or France. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English or French. Schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.

Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.

Accreditation & Membership

  • Council of International Schools (CoIS) is a non-profit association of international schools and post-secondary institutions which provides educational accreditation, teacher and leadership recruitment services, links to higher education, governance assistance and help with founding new schools.
  • Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) is a membership network for international Schools in Africa established to serve the professional development needs of its membership.
