You will find below a list of the most popular international and bilingual schools for expats in Nepal with fee information. The list includes nursery schools, primary and secondary (high) schools for you to find the right school to prepare for the International Baccalaureate and other accreditation in Nepal. Schools may follow the American or British curriculum with an English speaking program while others run under the French language and system.
Formal education was once only available to the elites in Nepal. Nepalese democracy began to change this in 1951 as classrooms opened to a more diverse population. This has greatly increased the nation's literacy rate, although there are still issues with the affordability of classes for low-income communities and exclusion of women, indigenous people and those considered to be a lower caste. Nepal has plans to further develop the system and ensure that every Nepalese child has an equal chance.
Education in Nepal begins in 1st grade (at age 6) with elementary continuing until 5th, lower secondary from 6th-8th, and secondary from 9th–10th. Pre-primary education is available in some areas. To graduate, students must pass the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination at the conclusion of grade 10. Students who pass this level may consider grades 11 and 12, supervised by Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB). Students may pursue commerce, education, humanities or science.
International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Nepal. International schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam.
There is usually local population, as well as an international student body. Schools may follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, etc. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.
Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.
