Education in Uzbekistan

The Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan guarantees the right to education, free and compulsory from ages 6 to 15. Literacy is practically universal for both men and women (99%).

Structure of school system:

  • Primary: (Grades 1-4) from 6 to 10 years old
  • General Secondary: (Grades 5-9) from 10 to 15 years old

Primary school begins at age 6 and there is no specific leaving examination after the 4 years are complete.

The next 5 years are spent at general secondary school from ages 10 to 15. Following that, there is a choice of between 2 to 3 years of upper education at either general or technical vocational schools. The former provides a certificate of completed secondary education and the opportunity to enter university, the latter a diploma of specialized secondary education, through a network of secondary vocational institutions.

The academic calendar is 2 semesters (from September to late December, and from early February to late June), and instruction is given 6 days per week. Some institutions have a 3-term calendar. There are annual examination periods at the end of each academic year, repeat examination periods in late June, and results are announced in July.

There are 131 higher education institutions in Uzbekistan, including 28 universities, 38 institutes, 3 academies, 25 branches, 1 conservatory, 22 branches of foreign universities, and 9 non-governmental higher education institutions.

International Schools

International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Uzbekistan. Many schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam.

There may be some local population, but the schools are usually geared for an international student body. Schools may follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, etc. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English, French, Spanish, German, or Japanese. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.

Admission and enrolment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.
