Education in Venezuela

In Venezuela, basic education is free and compulsory between the ages of 6 and 15. Secondary education, which lasts for 2 years, is also free but not required. Higher education is provided by private and public institutions, and approximately one-fourth of secondary school graduates attend them.

The school year extends from September through to June / July. 95% of citizens are literate and more than 92% of children attend primary school.

The Venezuelan Educational System comprises 4 levels:

1. Preschool Education: it constitutes the first compulsory level of the educational system and the pedagogical attention will last one school year. Children enter these educational establishments preferably at the age of five.
2. Basic Education is the second compulsory level of the educational system; It comprises three stages with a duration of three years each and is preferably taken after six years of age. The first stage is from first to third grade, the second stage from fourth to sixth grade, and the third stage from seventh to ninth grade (6 – 14 years old).
3. Diversified and Professional Secondary Education (Bachillerato) is the third level of the educational system; It constitutes the next level to Basic Education and prior to Higher Education, with which it is articulated curricular and administratively.
4. Higher Education is based on the previous levels and includes professional and postgraduate training, and can be studied at Universities, University Pedagogical, Polytechnic, Technological Institutes and University Colleges and at Armed Forces Officer Training Institutes.

International Schools

International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Venezuela. Many schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam.

There may be some local population, but the schools are usually geared for an international student body. Schools may follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, etc. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English, French, Spanish, German, or Japanese. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.

Admission and enrolment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular.
